For the last several newsletters we have been featuring a neighbour profile. For this newsletter we have chosen to feature a business. You may want to ask “why profile a business, how is that a neighbour?”
Well this business is one of Don Mills’ oldest: Maxwell’s Men’s Shop.
Started in 1936 and moved to Don Mills Plaza in 1958. The store moved from the Plaza to 900 Don Mills in 2006. Dave Gross, the original owner, sold to Mr. Connelly and Lou Longo in 1969 and Lou sold to Stephen Smith in 2006. Mike Fusco started working at Maxwell’s in 1974 and both Mike and Stephen will be retiring after the store closes on May 21, 2016. Stephen jokes about how his wife already has a list of things for him to do in his retirement.
They both speak fondly of their days in Don Mills and have been proud to be part of this community, noting how Don Mills has changed and grown over the years, and happy to see how many people have stayed in the community and how many children have moved back into Don Mills. Many of Maxwell’s clients had started out by coming into the store with their fathers – showing that Maxwell’s has truly stood the test of time.
Maxwell’s has been one of the longest supporters of the Don Mills Civitan Hockey, and I know they will greatly miss them.
Ask anyone what they remember about the plaza and they will tell you the same thing “Mike and Stephen were always there with a big smile and kind words, whether you were shopping for a new suit and a tie for your Dad, the sales staff of Maxwell’s was the best”.
With so many changes in our Don Mills community – Maxwell’s will be re-membered as a staple of our community.
Please join me in wishing all the guys at Maxwell’s, the best in their new ventures.
